Panama — Colón Free Zone Trade & Distribution (398 Listings)

Three hundred ninety-eight companies in this directory are located in Colón, Panama, and every one of them is classified Trade/Distribution. That uniformity is not a data gap. It is an accurate description of what the Colón Free Zone is. If you came to this directory looking for a factory, stop here: there is not one in this list, and there is not likely to be one in the zone itself.

What the Colón Free Zone actually is

The CFZ is a customs-segregated territory at the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal, one of the largest duty-free zones in the world — estimates of how many companies operate inside it vary by source, running roughly 2,000 to 2,500. Goods enter without paying Panamanian import duty or the 7% ITBMS sales tax. Inside, they can be stored, repackaged into smaller lots, relabeled, consolidated and re-exported to buyers across Latin America and the Caribbean. Duty attaches only if goods leave the zone into Panama's own economy; goods leaving for Guatemala, Jamaica or anywhere else never trigger it. The US government's own trade office describes the zone's core activity plainly: import and re-export of products "without adding value."

What these listings are, and are not

That phrase is the whole story. The companies here buy in volume — often from Asia, the United States or elsewhere — and resell into Latin American and Caribbean markets, frequently breaking large shipments into smaller retail-ready lots. That is real, substantial commercial activity, and Colón's traders, wholesalers and consolidators do it at a scale few places in the hemisphere match. It is also categorically different from contract manufacturing or OEM production. Nobody in this directory cuts, sews, molds, assembles or otherwise produces your product. If that is what you need, this is the wrong list.

The origin question that actually decides whether this saves you anything

Here is the point buyers most often get backward. Storing, relabeling and repackaging goods in Panama does not make them Panamanian for US customs purposes. Under the substantial-transformation standard US Customs applies, a good only takes on a new country of origin when it undergoes a fundamental change in form, appearance, nature or character in that country; repackaging and similar minor processing explicitly do not qualify. A shirt made in Vietnam, warehoused and relabeled in Colón, and shipped on to Miami is still a good of Vietnam when it lands — not eligible for US-Panama Trade Promotion Agreement preference on that basis. The zone's own description of its activity as adding no value is, in effect, an admission that most of what happens there cannot confer origin. If a sourcing plan depends on Colón transit converting Asian-made goods into Panamanian-origin goods for tariff purposes, that plan does not work without real production happening in Panama.

What to ask a Colón distributor

• Where were the goods actually manufactured, and can that be documented with a certificate of origin from that country?
• Does the company take title to inventory, or does it broker on behalf of others?
• What markets does it actually distribute into, beyond Panama itself?
• Does it have experience with US-bound freight and customs entry documentation for the true country of origin?
• What are typical minimum order quantities and lead times for consolidated shipments?

What this directory does and doesn't tell you

Each entry gives a company name, its Trade/Distribution classification, and its location in Colón — nothing on what it actually trades, which markets it reaches, or its standing with customs authorities. The zone has also long carried a reputation, deserved in some cases and not others, for transshipment and intellectual property problems, one more reason to verify any partner independently rather than treating inclusion here as a credential.
